While the FCC is taking comments about increasing the minimum speed standards for broadband from 4mbps to between 10mbps and 25mbps, there is now a task force exploring a 400 gigabit ethernet standard.
This seems like a huge amount of bandwidth, but there are growing demands for data, especially video. Carrier Ethernet News reports that, “Where the new standards might come in to play for Carrier Ethernet is near the edge of mobile data networks, where cellsite and video traffic is aggregated.”
As fiber broadband continues to become more common in communities across the nation and throughout the world, the need for higher speeds, like 100Gbps and 400Gbps, will become necessary to handle the data traffic volumes.
